Pixie Encounter

Cinnamon Bun

Pixie Encounter is a rain-soaked confrontation between Broccoli Bunch, Milread, Noemi, and a swarm of territorial pixies. Surrounded by hostile lights and facing the prospect of a magical attack, Broccoli rejects the expected path of violence and risks personal safety to negotiate. The encounter ends with the pixies accepting a jar of honey, allowing the travelers to continue, while also proving that Broccoli’s instinct to make friends can transform an ambush into an exchange.

Causes and Setting

The encounter begins when the traveling party discovers that the woods around the wagon are filled with glowing pixies. Their lights gather before the road, along the forest edges, across the ditches, and behind the travelers, making the danger feel encircling rather than localized. Milread and Noemi prepare for the possibility of fighting, while Missy reacts uneasily to the multitude of moving lights. The immediate cause is a territorial intrusion: the party has entered the pixies’ home while trying to travel through the rain toward shelter.

The balance of power is plainly unfavorable to Broccoli. The swarm forms a grid-like wall in the air, each pixie keeping roughly half a meter from the next until they create a barrier resembling suspended Christmas lights. The formation is simple but effective, and it places the group behind a living magical blockade. Broccoli understands that fighting would be nearly hopeless against around thirty angry pixies casting spells at once, yet the wet conditions make combat dangerous for everyone. The scene therefore turns on a narrow alternative: either the travelers force their way through, or Broccoli persuades the pixies that passage is worth permitting.

The Negotiation

Broccoli acts before Milread and Noemi can engage the swarm. He jumps from the wagon and lands in a muddy puddle a dozen feet ahead of it, positioning himself between the travelers and the largest concentration of pixies. Milread immediately calls him an idiot and warns him to return, but Broccoli insists that the others stay back and trust him, even while privately acknowledging that he hopes he knows what he is doing. His cheerful manner conceals a real tremble, making the negotiation an act of courage rather than evidence that he misunderstands the danger.

He introduces himself to the pixies and declares his wish to become their friend. The move is consistent with the moral ideal attached to his Cinnamon Bun class, which describes him as a support and friend to all, but the encounter tests whether that ideal can function outside the safety of a menu description. The green pixie leader responds with open hostility, sending a line of fire into the ground just ahead of Broccoli. Her gestures then indicate a demand for the honey rather than a polite request, and Broccoli must determine whether the exchange will be a bargain or simple extortion.

Broccoli offers the entire jar of honey in return for untroubled passage. He also apologizes for disturbing the pixies and explains that the travelers did not intend to trespass, but must continue along the road because their destination lies ahead. This apology matters alongside the payment: he recognizes the pixies’ territorial claim instead of treating them as monsters blocking an inconvenient route. The green leader eventually approaches, signs toward the jar and down the road, and accepts the proposed terms.

The transfer is deliberately cautious. Broccoli places the jar on the ground between himself and the pixies, takes three long steps backward, and presents the act as a completed business transaction. A flight of pixies seizes the jar and rushes into the forest, followed by the rest of the formation. The green leader remains behind for a moment, still suspicious, before uttering a brief farewell and darting after her companions. Milread’s assessment—that Broccoli is a brave idiot—captures the double character of the action: it is reckless in method, but successful because his recklessness is guided by empathy and an accurate reading of what the pixies value.

Friendship, Exchange, and Separation

The encounter does not end with the first bargain. Earlier, a pixie leader had agreed to escort Broccoli after he offered honey, and the pixie response demonstrated that the food was not merely currency. The leader communicated through rapid gestures, then dove head-first into an opened jar, somehow melting the hard honey before splashing into it. Other pixies gathered around and consumed it with their fists. Their delight turns the trade into a form of social contact, even though the parties lack a shared spoken language.

The escort eventually reaches the end of its useful road. Mister Blue signals that the travelers must part, and Broccoli admits that he does not want to return to being alone. He nevertheless gives up another filled jar of honey as a parting gift, keeping only one and a half jars for himself. When Broccoli says that he wishes he could hug Mister Blue goodbye, the tiny forest companion crosses the distance, wraps his arms across Broccoli’s chest despite being unable to reach around him, and departs with the honey floating behind him. This farewell gives the pixie relationship an emotional consequence beyond the immediate escape: the resource Broccoli uses to secure passage also creates attachments whose loss hurts when the road separates them.

Consequences and Significance

The immediate consequence of Pixie Encounter is safe passage through hostile territory. The pixies withdraw after receiving the honey, and the traveling party avoids a battle that might have killed or badly injured its members. Broccoli’s decision also preserves the possibility of future trust: he has entered the pixies’ world as a negotiator rather than an invader who answered magic with violence.

The event establishes a recurring pattern in Broccoli’s conduct. He repeatedly converts possessions into relationships, treating honey as something that can purchase help, express gratitude, and prevent bloodshed. That pattern contrasts with more formal exchanges elsewhere in his travels, such as the Exploration Guild contract, where he carefully preserves the right to withdraw and delays his admission fee until after his first mission. In both cases, Broccoli refuses to accept an arrangement without understanding its terms, but with the pixies he places himself in immediate danger to create those terms in the first place.

The scene also makes cleanliness and contamination part of the encounter’s physical texture. Broccoli is forced into mud, remains exposed to heavy rain, and later spends mana cleaning himself before sleeping under moist blankets. His Cinnamon Bun identity is therefore not expressed through untouched innocence. It is tested amid wet roads, hostile magic, and bodily discomfort. The same character whose class promises purity must enter the mud to protect others, suggesting that his purity is ethical rather than hygienic: it lies in choosing friendship and restraint when fear would make violence easier.
